Dedication

Who's the smiling face? Her name is Diane Collins, and she
is the secretary at the Student Government Association.
Diane is however, more than a secretary. She is a caring
and supportive person who, because of her enthusiasm and
dedication, keeps the SGA operating smoothly. Diane's
personal commitment to the SGA and to all students at
North Adams State College, is why the class of 1988 is dedi-
cating their book to her.

Diane, in appreciation and acknowledgement of your ar-
dent dedication, the class of 1988 dedicates our yearbook
to you. Your smiles, enthusiastic personality, hard work,
and words of encouragement have not gone unnoticed.

Thank you

On the starting line to a human race,

Commencement

On the starting line to a human race.
Limber, stretched, and awaiting to start,
Excited hearts beat at a passionate pace,
But before we are off and far apart

Stop, look around, inhale a reflective breath
And gather all the memories of years past -
They will make the air you breathe fresh -
They will be an energy that will last.

In the span of a lifetime,
We may run a marathon of mountainous miles
Because life is not always in rhyming harmony.
Return, then, to past moments and smile.

Let's go for everything we deserve and desire,
And while we look towards the horizon
The starter, with pistol held high, fires . . .

The race has begun.

Berkshire Towers known affectiona-
tely as the "Towers," is one of the two
freshman dorms on campus. Many of
us seniors began our NASC stay there:
Remember those late night fire
alarms? or how about Dennis Caprone

Soccer

Men's

"The Men's Soccer team's record was
just as impressive as NASC finished
10-5-1. Unfortunately, the Mohawks
failed to qualify for post-season play,
largely due to the strength of the
MASCAC.

Seniors Armind Dias, Mike Shiel and
All-Conference star Brian Harlow
helped to lead North Adams to key
victories against Eastern Connecti-
cut, Castleton State and Bridgewater
State.

Look for the Mohawks to come back
with a vengeance next season as vet-
erans Bill Wilson, Torin Dudley, Mike
Kemp and Gary Cortell, among others,
will seek to reclaim the MASCAC ti-
tle."

Women's

"The biggest surprise of the fall sports season
was the success of the Women's Soccer team. I
In only its third year of organized play, the 1
squad battled its way to a 11-7-1 record as the
Mohawks won the MASCAC title and earned
an ECAC bid. North Adams also defeated arch-
rival Williams, 4-0, for Coach Susan Getchell's
first win over the Purple Cows in either fiek
hockey or soccer since 1974.

Even though NASC bowed in a tough double
overtime contest to Tufts, 3-1, in the post-sea
son tournament, the Mohawks' future appear;
to be bright. The inspired play of newcomer;)
Betsy D'Agostino and Roberta Smith helpe(
turned several close games into North Adam:
victories.

The enthusiasm of the fresh talent meshec
well with the experience of the veterans. Su<
Giagrande, Sheila Horgan, Jackie Wilson am,
Pam Perlmutter were a few of the returnee
that contributed mightily to the Mohawks sue
cess."

Tennis

Men's

and

Women's

"On the court, the Men's Tennis team
snagged its fourth MASCAC title in
five years by winning all nine confer-
ence matches on its way to a 16-2
overall record. Junior Ray Reed
served up a 15-4 record as he was
named the squad's MVP.

The Women's Tennis team's season
was highlighted by an important win
over American International College.
Pam McHugh, Jen Cavalluzzi, Debbie
Koski, and Linda Rammer each won
their singles matches in decisive
fashion to lead the Mohawks to the 7-
2 victory."

Volleyball

A

\

1* *Al |L

"The NASC Volleyball team broke new
ground, as the Mohawks slammed
their way into the win column twice
this season. This was the first time
that they had won more than once in
a season. Sue Palladino, Karyn Forrest-
er, Pam Rutter and freshman phenom-
enon Mary Vaughn were among those
who helped the Volleyballers to their
best season ever."

KM

Basketball

Men's

"The men's basketball team, under the
guidance of new Head Coach Al Sokaitis,
surprised many across the state by win-
ning the MASCAC title. The Mohawks re-
bounded from an upset loss in Westfield
to eventually defeat Salem State, 92-87, in
a tie-breaking contest. The win decided
the conference championship in North
Adams' favor and sent the hoopsters to
the NCAA Division III tournament at SMU
for the second straight year.

NASC lost its opening round contest in the
tourney to the Corsairs, 91-75, and
dropped the consolation game to the Uni-
versity of Southern Maine, 84-60. Even
though the Mohawks' performance was a
disappointment, this season provided
many pleasant memories for NASC hoop
fanatics.

Perhaps the most exciting win in North
Adams' basketball history occurred on
Dec. 9 when the Mohawks overcame a 47-
point performance by Williams' Garcia
Major to defeat the Ephmen, 104-99, in a
double-overtime thriller that left all in at-
tendance gasping for air.

Guard Phil Bledsoe (23 points per game)
and center Bernard Alexander (20ppg)
were each named to Division III All-Star
teams, Co-captains Kevin Plankey and
Don Edwards each exhibited leadership
and provided effective defense, and Tony
Paranto electrified crowds with his 60%
accuracy from three-point range."

Women's

"The Women's Basketball team
played better than its 6-18 record.
With a few breaks in several close
games, the Mohawks could have ap-
proached the .500 mark for the sea-
son.

NASC's hard luck was exacerbated
late in the season when co-captain
and point machine Nora Hartigan
went down with a fractured leg. Nev-
ertheless, the Mohawks scrapped
their way to several victories behind
the play of Palladino, Bonnie Cameron
and Gail Bonefant. Freshmen Cheryl
Williams and Chris Lisien provided
some optimism for the future with
their skill and hard work on the
boards."

Ice Hockey

The NASC Hockey team at times re-
sembled a wandering caravan, as all
but eight of its games were played on
the road this season. The Mohawks
compiled a 12-14-1 record, and some of
their most impressive wins came over
Framingham State, 13-1, WNEC, 9-5,
and Potsdam State, 7-3.

The most frustrating loss of the year
for NASC and its coach, Bill Turner,
who will be leaving North Adams at
the end of the semester, occurred at
Williams on Feb. 19. The Mohawks
gave the Cows all they could handle
for two and half periods, but repeat-
edly foiled by Williams' goalie, Mark
Morrison, during a late flurry. After
the contest ended, an ugly brawl be-
tween NASC players and Williams
fans broke out near the Mohawks'
dressing room.

4 A

Softball

"The Softball team had a trying year,
as the Mohawks finished with a re-
cord of 5-13. NASC triumphed in three
of its first five games, but was not able
to continue its winning ways for the
remainder of the season.

The most important victories of the
year came as the Mohawks won both
games against Williams College.
Freshman hurler Jodi Frasca pitched
a one-hitter to lead North Adams to
a 6-0 victory. In the season finale at
home against the Ephwomen, Tri-Cap-
tains Traci Callahan, Horgan and
Giagrande finished their careers with
a 9-1 win."

Some things we'll all remember about North Adams State are the "special"
events the college offers. Yahoo Fest, Mud Fest, The Pines Run, Wacky Sport
Days and the classic Cliff Myers nights in the Pub, are some of the annual
events which make N.A.S.C. a unique place to be a part of.
